ROUND-UP

Invitation to join Chedham’s Yard Trust

In October 2010 Chedham's Yard was registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee and an application is currently with the Charity Commissioners for charitable status.

The Directors are therefore seeking members for the Trust and everyone is invited to join. The members will receive benefits such as priority booking at Chedham's Yard events, free/ reduced admissions to the yard and regular updates on progress on site.

Currently there are three directors – Marion Johnston, Heather Cox and John McKenzie – and they will co-opt up to six more to serve up until the first Annual General Meeting of the Trust. The Parish Council has the right to nominate two Trustees as well, bringing the total number of trustees up to eleven. The first Annual General Meeting is planned for March 2012 and at this meeting, the entire board will stand down and elections take place for a new board. In order for the Trust to work well and demonstrate it has the support of the community it is vital that it has a broad base of membership.

Application forms can be downloaded from the website www.chedhamsyard.org.uk, or obtained from the Parish Council offices.

Wellesbourne in Bloom

Although the weather has been in deep winter mode we have still been very busy. The St Peter's Church Project is going well. The Scouts have been infilling all the gaps in the hedge by the horses' field with new native hedging for us. The 3 new planters arrived with a few hitches, the delivery lorry got stuck in Church Street and they forgot to bring a fork lift to put the planters in position. We were stuck but were kindly rescued by two of Michael Twite's Landscapes employees who came straight down after a plea for help and put all three in place for us. We are so grateful.

Due to the weather our library planting has been postponed. Once the trees are in and the turf down we will do our bit.

Happy New Year and may it be a 'Blooming Good one'.

Wellesbourne & District

February is traditionally a quiet time for the Lions in terms of public events. However behind the scenes there is plenty of activity as business carries on as usual with Lions helping out wherever they can in the local community. At the end of February we hold our annual election night, where a new president is chosen and other key willing!! Volunteers are asked to fill other key roles within the organisation.

It seems an opportune time for me to do my recruitment bit. If you would like to serve your community coupled with the opportunity to join in with a number of fun social events, then Lions could be for you. It is open to both men and Women. If you would like to know more then contact me on 01789 841939.

Some fantastic news – thanks to everybody's generosity we collected £5,167 from our pre-Christmas collections around the District. This included a kind donation of £250 from Orbit Housing for ‘sweets for Santa's sack’. All profits will be shared equally amongst this year's local charities. This exceeded last year's collections, which is amazing in such a difficult economic climate.

Finally I would like to remind everybody that the Lions have a minibus for hire to organisations in the district – if you would like more information please call Lion Paul Gibson on 01789 841730.

End of an Era

The WAG Saturday Walks finished in spectacular style in the heaviest snow for some time. Stalwarts Peter Davies, Brenda Pengelly and Judith Gaston think nothing of wrapping up well and braving a -6°C blizzard for the sake of a healthy walk from Wellesbourne to the Charlecote Deer Park and back.

Sadly these walks have not been well attended so this was the last one on a Saturday. Maybe they can continue on another day.

Thank you for reading my few neighbourly words: I know you do because I get quite a bit of feed back. If there is anything YOU would like mentioned, do let me know (contact details below). I like to think the best of every one and I am sure that most of the people we meet in and around Wellesbourne can be trusted and indeed would go out of their way to help a neighbour. However... some just cannot resist temptation when they see an opportunity to help themselves to your property and this is where we can help. Do not put temptation in their way: did you know that the majority (there are exceptions of course) gain access from open doors (I actually left my front door on the catch once and was away for some considerable time, just lucky that no one discovered it!), open windows, keys left under the mat or in full view and easy to reach through the letter box. I know you have heard it all before, but I suppose we do get a bit complacent around here and sometimes simply forget. Have you ever been half way up the motorway and thought "did I lock the garage?"

Sometimes I think I should have a little "check list" you know, like the airline pilots do, a quick actual look around, not a glance but actually check every where is closed and locked (don't forget the FRONT door on your way out!) and all the right switches and taps are off. Amazingly intruders do not always wait for you go out, so when you are enthralled with the latest episode of Coronation Street or deep in your favourite book, or maybe having a little snooze, do check that all doors are locked. Should you ever find someone has been in your house, or you see something suspicious, it saves valuable minutes if you have a police contact number handy. Stratford 414111 or Wellesbourne 444600 and of course the familiar 999 if a crime is being committed. Go on, make a note of it NOW, and hopefully you will never need it. Oh, I nearly forgot to mention SMART WATER, my favourite deterrent: that colourless, odourless liquid that has the ability to security mark valuable items of property with a unique DNA-style chemical formula. Available through Neighbourhood Watch at the reduced price of £15.
