WELLESBOURNE VILLAGE INFORMATION

Description   Statistics   Ecology   Links   Charities   Meet Our Neighbours

In 1976, as part of a county-wide survey organised by the Warwickshire Museum Service, a field-by-field parish survey was carried out by Wellesbourne Women's Institute. The 1955 6" to a mile Ordnance Survey map was used as the baseline for the survey. The results were published in 'The Warwickshire Countryside' an ecological evaluation, published by Warwickshire Museum Service, 1980, ISBN 0 950 5942 8 8

The following information about the civil parish of Wellesbourne (including Walton) is extracted from this publication and refers to the area in 1976.

Wellesbourne (and Walton) Parish information (as at 1976 survey)

DESCRIPTION

The village lies on well-drained gravelly deposits of the Avon-Dene valley. To the south there are stiffer clays beyond which a marked escarpment, well-hung with a most impressive curtain of fine mixed woodland, rises through Rhaetic limestones and clays to the Lower Lias plateau.

Farming is predominantly arable, with largish fields.

In its upper reaches the River Dene is a typical, pleasant, meandering stream but flood alleviation work at and below Wellesbourne has removed much of the natural charm in the lower reaches. Walton Hall lakes are a very attractive spot for birds and wildflowers, and the pools at Staple Hill, although more functional, also support a good range of species.

Dutch Elm Disease has hit this parish very severely because of the predominance of elm in the hedgerows.
