Stratford upon Avon Chamber Music SocietyThe purpose of this music society, which was founded more than 40 years ago, is to provide chamber music concerts in Stratford for people living there or in the surrounding towns and villages. The concerts are free to the Society’s members (who pay an annual subscription), but anyone else can buy a ticket for one or more concerts. Chamber music is of course music on a relatively small scale, suitable for a small concert hall. So, the Society’s concerts are given by duos, trios, quartets, up to as large a group as a septet but not nearly as large as a full orchestra. This sort of music is particularly suited to Mason Croft, the Shakespeare Institute in Church Street, Stratford, where all the concerts are held. It has a lovely old concert hall, with excellent acoustics and a maximum audience capacity of around one hundred. The Society aims to put on concerts of the highest quality it can afford. Most of the performing artists are fairly young. The programmes are strong on Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven but range quite widely over the chamber music repertoire.
