NEWS ROUND-UP
Wellesbourne & District
I hope you have all had a
good Easter break. The Lions would like to thank everybody who participated in
our giant Easter egg fund-raiser: those people that bought a square and
especially those businesses that agreed to take one of the giant eggs. I will
let you know how much money was raised in next month’s news.
The Lions’ partners hosted a lion racing evening at Barford Village Hall on
Saturday 2nd April. It was a fun filled evening with everyone
getting involved. An amazing £693 was raised for Smile Train.
Sunday 19th June sees the annual raft race down the river Avon from
Wasperton to Stratford. Anybody interested in entering a raft please contact
Lion Peter Fisher on 01789 842031. Even if you are not actively taking part it
is a great spectacle – put the date in your diaries.

Wellesbourne Flower Club
In February over forty members and guests celebrated
Wellesbourne Flower Club’s 25th anniversary by visiting a local hotel for
afternoon tea. Julia Mitchell entertained us with a lovely demonstration which
included beautiful celebration designs and delightful tea time flower treats
including flower cup cakes.
Pippa Phillips, past Chair, made a wonderful iced 25th Anniversary cake
for members to enjoy with their coffee for our March meeting. Catherine Wickens
our current Chair demonstrated a hand-tie arrangement and a beautiful wired
horseshoe which would be perfect to give a bride. After refreshments some
members tried these designs for themselves. We are a very friendly club and
welcome new members; we usually meet the third Wednesday each month at 7.30pm
in the Village Hall. Why not join us? For more details phone 01789 841567.

Girlguiding News
“Being Prepared”
Slings and bandages were in evidence at Wellesbourne Guides recently. Rachel is
comforting Catherine who has a suspected broken arm but the Guides were only
practising for their first aid badge under the supervision of Rob from St. John’s Ambulance.
The Guides have been trained in what to do in an emergency situation and how to
make an emergency phone call. They have practised resuscitation techniques on
manikins and bandaging to support broken limbs. They have been taught to
recognise symptoms of asthma, choking, diabetic emergency, epilepsy, heart
attack and poisoning, how to treat fractures and burns and recognise when a
person should go to hospital.
With the warm weather coming there is the danger of insect bites and sunstroke.
The Guides now know how to use the contents of a simple first aid box but they must
keep up to date by re-taking the badge every two years.
If you would like more information about Girlguiding in the Wellesbourne area
contact District Commissioner Kate Skinner 01789 842148.

Wellesbourne Village Hall Needs a Booking Secretary.
The task is not onerous. It requires someone
available to answer phone/email enquiries, and at times, willing to show the
facilities at the hall to potential hirers, as well as arrange for the key to
be loaned out. The Booking Secretary also reports to the Management Committee
four times a year and liaises regularly with the Chairman and the caretaker.
Enquiries to Linda Dane on 01789 470491.

LOCAL ELECTIONS 2011
As I said last month there’s an election on May 5th.
For most of us, I guess,
the elections will consist of reading a few leaflets, seeing some stories on
the evening news and receiving a visit from a canvasser.
But it certainly is a very busy few weeks for those involved since the candidates and their
teams will be trying very hard to get round each of the 3000 houses in the
Wellesbourne Ward.
Danny Kendall is also seeking election to the District Council this year. Danny is a
Parish Councillor and has been involved in the Vision 4 Wellesbourne Parish
Plan Group, helping to re-evaluate our community’s key priorities so that we
know precisely what matters most to Wellesbourne.
Refurbishing the Sports & Community Centre, finding new Youth Facilities and maintaining a
decent standard of Village Car Parking were high on the list of very important
priorities for the Village.
Particular issues for the future includes reducing traffic speeding on all the village’s
principal roads, the future of the sports club and lessening the impact of the
financial cuts such as using volunteer help at the library.
I hope that as many of you as possible will find just a few minutes to go out and
vote on May 5th.
Fantastic
weather to greet the spring and I expect many of you have tried to get to grips
with the garden, However and isn't there always one! You must be on your
guard for that opportunist thief just waiting to relieve you of your essential
gardening equipment. Sadly a friend has recently been caught out. After
having spent a fruitful day in the garden, popped across to a
neighbour with some cuttings, leaving the gate unlocked. On return, yes
you've guessed it, the mower and a handful of tools were missing. So please
treat your garden the same way as your house by making it secure which means
locking away ladders tools etc when not in use. Keeping out intruders with
good fencing and/or prickly plants and ALWAYS locking doors and gates. ALSO –
the perfect opportunity to use your magic, well not quite magic
but very clever, Smart Water on all your garden tools (please
contact me for more details).
We are looking forward to seeing you at the AGM on Thursday 12th May 7.30pm
prompt, at the “Connie Club” in Church Street. Leanne Town from
Severn Trent will be telling us all about their services, with tips on how to
recognise genuine callers from the utility providers. We have a lot of new NW
literature for you and Smart Water will be on sale at a special price. If you
feel you would like to be a bit more involved in NW, we do have two vacancies
on the committee and we would be pleased to have a chat. Everyone is welcome
and the bar will be open.
