Bloomers Spring into action

Despite all the horrid cold weather the “Bloomers” have started their gardening year. The St Peter's Church Project is coming on. We are planning to hold workshops with the youngsters and the artist commissioned to do the sculptures sometime in the next couple of months. The path should be going in soon too. We have planted the library planter and created a border of mixed bulbs and spring bedding. There are 8 trees to go in, so when it is finished it should look lovely.

I have been in Vietnam visiting my daughter which coincided with the Chinese New Year. The centre of Ho Chi Minh was totally transformed. The main street was closed; brick structures were built on the road. Hundreds of thousands of plants were put together to make huge sculptures. Huge poinsettia lights hung from the street lamps. I have never seen so many yellow chrysanthemums in my life. Everyone on a scooter seemed to be carrying them as well. I don't think Wellesbourne is ready for that, but I did get some ideas.

A lady rang me when I was in Vietnam and I have lost her number if she could contact me again that would be great, my sincere apologies it was all a bit too exciting.

Dog Fouling

IN CHERRY ORCHARD

In this very narrow street, dog mess is frequently found on our doorsteps and tiny gardens. Please act responsibly, pick up any mess and report to the Dog Warden 01789 260839; any dog owners who do not, they are breaking the law. Thank you for your help. Police are now monitoring this street more closely.

Master Gardener

Calling food growing enthusiasts

A project that has supported 150 households in Warwickshire to grow their own is calling out for more volunteers to help share food growing skills.

Just nine months old, the Garden Organic Master Gardener programme – a volunteer network supporting Warwickshire residents to grow food – has also reached over 4,500 people in the wider community.

Now Garden Organic, the UK's leading organic growing charity, is looking for more food growing enthusiasts to join the dedicated team of Master Gardeners in Warwickshire who are sharing their enthusiasm for food growing with their communities. Together they aim to build local skills, encourage organic growing and provide access to fresh, home-grown fruit and vegetables.

If you live in Warwickshire and are interested in becoming a Master Gardener, or are a resident looking for food growing advice, please call Kate Newman on 024 7621 7721, or email at: knewman@gardenorganic.org.uk to find out more. For more information, visit www. warwickshire.mastergardeners.org.uk .

Wind assisted farming

The first commercial wind turbine in South Warwickshire has started turning on farmland in Snitterfield. The small scale 10kw wind turbine has been put up on land owned by Warwickshire County Council at Oldhouse Farm. The turbine is being used to generate electricity to power the farm.

The wind turbine project has taken over two years to come to fruition. It is mounted on a 12 metre high tower and connected to the national grid. The height and position of the tower have been chosen to ensure that it is best suited to capturing wind energy while keeping any environmental impact to a minimum. The turbine at Oldhouse Farm is a pilot project for the county council's farms that will assess the benefits of generating power from a renewable resource on a smallholding.

A typical wind turbine has a service life of 20 years. It is estimated that a wind turbine of this scale will generate an average of 18,000 Kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, the equivalent to saving 8.1 tonnes of carbon dioxide. The projected saving in carbon emissions over the 20 year life of the project will be 162 tonnes.
