GOOD NEWS ON A SAD SUBJECT
Every road death is tragic. The final UK count for 2009 was published in July at
2,222. This is 12% less than in 2008.
Some of this great improvement is attributed to new safety features in cars —
especially Electronic Stability Control, in which Britain is world leader in
rate of growth. Yet we still lose six lives each day on our roads.
Overseas the scene on road safety has been dreadful, escalating every year, worst in the
poorer countries. At last there was a striking improvement in 2008 within 52
countries of the International Transport Forum (excluding India). They reported road deaths 8.9% fewer than in 2007 (latest data), and the forecast is for a further 10% improvement for 2009.
Here in Britain we can count our blessings, and continue to drive with constant
awareness of all the hazards that face us.

I hope you are all enjoying the summer. The Lions have been busy as usual at this
time of the year participating in a number of local fêtes, and The Lions will be
at Walton Fête and Dog Show on Sunday 8th August.
The Lions Club annual raft race took place on 20th June: around forty rafts started
and only two weren't able to finish. There was fantastic support at the start,
at Hampton Lucy and Alveston, and a bumper crowd to cheer the rafters home.
Money raised from this year's event is going to the local air ambulance.
On Monday 28th June, Lions hosted a visit to Stratford from a group of children
from Belarus living near Chernobyl, who are visiting the UK, funded by the Chernobyl Children's Project International. The children were treated to
a boat trip on the river Avon, and then went to Brantano where they were each
given school shoes. They then went to Stratford Armouries for lunch, a guided
tour and a long session in the soft play area. It was a fantastic day for
everyone, particularly the members of the Wellesbourne Lions who were delighted
to see the children having such a good time.
Finally, can I urge you all to support our ‘mini prom’, Sunday 12th September at the Guy
Nelson Hall in Warwick?

A group of Wellesbourne ladies have joined together in producing a decade-on version of
the infamous Women's Institute calendar of the year 2000. The Wellesbourne
Blooms, spanning five decades themselves, have modestly bared various bits
and pieces to raise money for the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer.
Their inspiration escalated from the successes in fund raising by friends &
neighbours, Adrian and Jane Cure, of Lowes Lane, who have lived in Wellesbourne
for over ten years. Sadly, 51 year old Adrian was diagnosed with incurable Kidney
Cancer three years ago. This form of cancer is rare and few drugs are
available to prolong the life of a diagnosed patient. To help raise awareness
and research into kidney cancer, Adrian and Jane have
already organised a variety of charity events, resulting in the donation of
around £10,000 primarily to the James Whale Fund.
The Calendar Launch takes place on Saturday 4th September at 7.30pm in St Peter's Church Hall,
when the models (fully clothed!) will be in attendance. Those
present will also include their photographer David Clarke, the
production team, and the numerous local businesses that have kindly sponsored the calendar.
Launch tickets, at £2 per head, are available from Helen 01789 840125 or Adrian 07973
283765 and all proceeds will be donated to the James Whale Fund for Kidney
Cancer. Do not miss this opportunity to support this worth while cause and
obtain a calendar which runs from December 2010 to February 2012.
